Keep Pets Safe This Fourth of July: Fireworks Can Frighten Furry Friends
While fireworks are a beloved tradition on the Fourth of July, they can pose serious risks to our pets. The loud bangs, bright flashes, and unfamiliar smells can be terrifying for animals, often triggering anxiety, panic, or even physical harm. Dogs and cats may try to escape or hide, leading to injuries or getting lost. In fact, July 5th is one of the busiest days for animal shelters due to runaway pets.
Fireworks can also cause:
• Noise phobia: Loud sounds can lead to shaking, drooling, pacing, and destructive behavior.
• Burn injuries: Pets curious about lit fireworks or firework debris can suffer burns or ingest toxic materials.
• Heart issues: Older pets or those with health conditions may experience elevated stress levels or heart problems.
• Long-term anxiety: One traumatic event can result in ongoing noise sensitivity or separation anxiety.
To protect your pets, keep them indoors in a secure, quiet space, use calming aids if needed, and ensure they have updated ID tags or microchips. Fireworks may light up the sky—but they can deeply distress the ones we love on the ground.
